“Be strong and of good courage.” ~Deuteronomy 31:6
She lay on her bed, staring up at the ceiling, thinking about how her hopes, dreams and goals had seemingly shattered at her feet, and all she could do was watch them die. The math test she failed, the tryout she botched, the music piece she had completely messed up on, the argument she had with her parents, and the friendship that seemed to have died all floated around her mind, adding to her inner turmoil. For a person that doesn’t have any hope, this situation looks bleak. For a person that doesn’t have any hope, right now seems to be a good time to give up. If you fail everything, that makes you a failure right? WRONG. This is not a good time to give up. There is never a good time to give up.
Have you ever felt like giving up? Sometimes it is hard to look past failure, disappointment, loss or defeat. That is why God calls us to “Be strong and of good courage.” In other words, “Do not give up! Do not be afraid!” This can be hard at times. No one ever said that it was going to be easy. Nothing about being a true follower of Christ is going to be easy. If life was so easy, we wouldn’t need the Bible or the promises that are inside of it! We would never need the encouragement or strength that we receive by relying on God.
Here are some good reasons that God gives us to never give up.
1. God is with you. “For the Lord thy God, He it is that doth go with thee.” (Deuteronomy 31:6) God is not only with you in the good and prosperous moments. He is also with you during the moments that your mouth cannot speak your pain, and your eyes are full of tears. He is with you during the frustrated moments, the painful moments, and the stubborn moments. God is with you. It is up to you whether or not you acknowledge His presence.
2. He will not fail you. “He will not fail thee.” (Deuteronomy 31:6) I can not brag about my love for God, because I fail Him daily, but I CAN brag about His love because it never fails. Because God is perfect, He is literally not capable of being unfaithful. Because He is perfect, He is not capable of failure. Because He is perfect, He is not capable of breaking His promises. If He is your God, He will not fail you. He will not break His promise to you.
3. He will not forsake you. “He will neither fail thee nor forsake thee.” (Deuteronomy 31:6) The Bible is full of this promise. There are so many verses in the Bible that either echo or very similarly state this promise. Here are a few for you to look up in your Bible and highlight yourself: Deuteronomy 31:6&8, Hebrews 13:5, Joshua 1:5, Isaiah 41:10, Matthew 28:20, Hebrews 13:5-6, Genesis 28:15, 1 Chronicles 10:13, and so many more places. This promise is repeated so many times, how is it even possible that we could forget this? Doesn’t this make it even more likely that God doesn’t forget either? Trust in His promises. He will never leave you or forsake you.
How can I be a girl that never gives up? Everyone goes through times in their life when they feel that they can’t go on. It’s part of being a human. Here are some ways that you can practice being a girl that never gives up.
1. Learn to pause, but not quit. Give God time to work. “Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.” (Psalm 27:14)
2. Surround yourself with people that will fight with and for you. Having others to back you up and encourage you will make it hard to give up. “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up.” (1 Thessalonians 5:11)
3. Keep your eyes on the bigger picture. We need to have faith to look up and see Who is holding the bigger picture. Life is so much more than what we can see with the physical eye. “Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.” (Colossians 3:2)
Let’s ask God to give us the strength we need to never give up.
Dear Father,
I come to you today to ask You to help me to never give up. I know that everything is according to Your purpose, but sometimes I forget. I pray that You would allow me to feel Your presence when I am tempted to give up. Teach me to be courageous in You, Lord, and help me to get back up when I fall. You only are my strength and comfort. I know I don’t deserve it Lord, so I thank You. Help me to trust and keep my eyes on the bigger picture. In Jesus’ Name,
Amen.
