Faith Is Like Jumping Off a Jumping Rock

Imagine with me that you are standing on the edge of a rock. You lean forward and look at the water below, 15 or so feet away. Your heart beats a little faster, the adrenaline starting to make you tingle to the tips of your fingers and toes. Maybe I should just back out, you think to yourself, leaning again to see the water below. The jump looks even farther now. I’m not gonna make it. I’m scared. I don’t know how to do this. Your friends call to you below from the water, “Just jump! You can do it!” You close your eyes (and maybe plug your nose if you are like me) and take the leap off the edge, maybe letting out a little (or big) scream on your way down. You resurface, clear the water from your eyes, and look back at the rock that you just jumped off of. Now that you’ve done it once, it doesn’t seem nearly as scary or big as it did standing at the top.
I had this similar experience a few weekends ago.
I jumped off a jumping rock for the first time. At the top of this rock, something struck me.
Jumping off a jumping rock and faith have something in common: the need for courage.
Being a faithful follower of Christ is not a walk in the park. The climb to the top of the jumping rock is no easy task. You could lose your grip on the rope tied to a branch; the limb that the rope is hanging off of could break; you could slip on your way up and be seriously injured. The kind of courage you need for the climb is persevering courage.
The climb that leads to faith typically isn’t easy. It can be full of pain, heartache, anxiety, fear, loneliness, and silence. It can be tough. It can be gruelling. It can even seem like it isn’t worth it. And sometimes it isn’t. (Think about those who climb all the way to the top, and then decide to climb back down instead of jumping in feet first.)
But, it also takes courage to take the leap of faith. The kind of courage that trusts that God will protect you from anything and everything that could harm you. This doesn’t mean the perfect life, but the strength to get through the ups and downs with God as the anchor, knowing that He IS there in the toughest storms, guiding you to the other side.
Faith is like jumping off a jumping rock. But the heart of the matter is: Do you have what it takes to take the leap of faith? Do you believe that God is worth taking the plunge of faith?
I want to be a girl that takes this leap of faith in full trust that Jesus has got me. Do you?
I’ll be praying for all of you as you consider this leap of faith 💗
